II Corinthians 5:18, 19 “God … hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation”

We are told about our enemy by Peter when he says, “Be sober, be vigilant for your adversary the devil walketh about seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 1:8). The devil is actively seeking to devour the souls of men and women. Lester Roloff once preached a message called “things I admire about the devil.” It would not hurt us to imitate the devil in this one thing – he is always on the job. As Christians, we also have a job, to preach the gospel to all creatures. As Christians we should be seeking for souls as zealously as the Bible tells us that the devil is seeking them. If that sounds strange to you consider the text quoted above. The devil seeks to devour men from being saved. Devour has special meaning to me as eating something quickly, much the same way that some of us eat. The devil knows that his time is short. So he is working very quickly to damn souls. As born again believers we too should realize that our time is short as well. We may only work in the field only while they are white for the harvest. The night is coming, as the song says, when no man can work. We must not say that there are yet three or four months. We must work now for the salvation of souls. We must snatch people out of the fire, as Jude says, hating even the garments that are spotted by the flesh. With God’s help we may do this.

Romans 10:13-18. Paul gives us the precious salvation promise that whosoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. We cling to this promise. It was this very promise that I told God that I believed the day I was saved. Most people, myself included, fail to see the needed ingredients that are connected to the salvation of that verse. The text goes on to tell us that they cannot call on who they have not believed. The only way one can be saved or call on the Lord is to believe with all of one’s heart. Salvation is by faith. One must be fully persuaded in order to be saved. The message goes on that one cannot believe in Him of whom they have never heard. They must hear the message – the message of the gospel. The text goes on and tells us that they cannot hear without a preacher. One must be there to give them the message. God has sent you and me, and all Christians to preach the gospel. If one is to be saved we must do our part or else they will not hear and as a result will not believe and be saved.
