A Walk In Genesis

 

Introduction:

 

The human author of this book is Moses.  There is a belief, and a great possibility that Moses was merely an editor and that the story of Creation, the fall, the flood, the tower of Babel, and Abraham’s family was handed down through the generations, and Moses compiled them.  It is my personal belief that the book was personally told to Moses by Christ (II Pet. 1:21, II Tim. 3:16). This book is of the utmost importance for it tells us where we came from and what we are.  It teaches us how God deals both in judgment and grace.  This book is the foundation for the whole Bible, and that is particularly why modern man has attempted to destroy, and disprove it (Ps. 11:3). Genesis means the book of beginnings and as we study we will see the beginning of many things.  But as we study this book we will, above all, be looking for Christ and the marvelous plan of redemption.  For Christ is the center and fullness of all Scripture (Ps. 40:7, John 5:39).

 

Natural History (Genesis 1:1 – 2:3) This is not natural history in the sense that it is taught by evolutionist, those that profess themselves to wise (Rom. 1:22).  This portion of Scripture does not teach that there is a process of billions of years of time that nature (not God) brought about all life.  This rather is history given by the God of history Himself concerning the beginning of time.  God Himself reveals to Moses in this passage the first seven (24 hour periods) days of time itself.  He tells us how He created nature and life.  We ought to believe the eternal God who was there rather than the opposition of science, falsely so called (I. Tim. 6:20).  Therefore we will not spend much time trying to answer science and its Godless implications but we will look rather at what God says in faith.

 

Day 1 (Genesis 1:1-5

“In the beginning . . . .” (1:1

We must answer first this question, “the beginning of what?” It is in the broadest sense the beginning of all things, hence the name of the book Genesis or the book of beginnings.  It is the beginning of all matter and space.  This shows us that all matter is not a part of God or an extension of His being.  He was before all things (Col. 1:17).  God is separate form His creation.  This does suggest strongly to us that there is nothing prior to this first verse.  There is no matter physically or spiritually prior to this utterance other than the persons of God.  There are no created beings, angels, devils, or any other such thing.  This is a proof text for the eternal existence of God. So God, as proven by the prophecy of the Bible, knows the end from the beginning. “In the beginning God . . . .” This leads us into the stricter sense of the words, the creation of time itself.  God being eternal and infinite exists outside of time. This utterance is the very starting point of time.

 

Science, so called, has nervously searched for an elusive theory of everything for the last hundred years.  They have promised man a unified body of knowledge that was able to answer all of man’s questions by natural means without the need of God.  Their theories have been forced upon us as facts, have been taught to us in all levels of education, and have been incorporated into all fields of study.  The religion of Darwinism has been incorporated into all segments of society, including politics and industry, with all its negative and damaging effects despite the fact that it lacks one shred of evidence.  They have ostracized all who disagree with their conclusions and have suppressed all data that contradicts their theories.

 

This was proved by the recent federal court decision that refused to even add a disclaimer to school text books saying that evolution is only a theory and not an established fact.  But now they all must with a shamed face admit that there was a beginning.  All rational science points to the fact that our universe had a beginning.  Matter, time, and space are not eternal.  Within our cause and effect universe this has posed quite a problem for all who deny God.  An effect is anything that begins to exist or is produced.  There can never be an effect without there being a sufficient cause.  Therefore if our universe had a beginning then there must be a Cause.  Nothing cannot be a cause.  If we heard a little bang as we walked down the road and asked what caused it we would not accept such an answer as “nothing caused it.”  So if there was a Big Bang we sould not accept such an answer eith.

 

The fact that there is a beginning is the greatest proof that there is a God.  And the fact of a beginning also tells us much about this God.  This God is revealed in his creation as the Bible declares that He is.  To effect such a thing as vast as the universe requires that the cause be sufficient in power.  Thus we learn that God is omnipotent.  The fact that the cause created all matter proves that the cause is not corporeal and is beyond matter.  Thus we learn that God is Spirit and is infinite.  God is separate from His creation and He is not synonymous with the trees and the grass.  The fact that the cause effected time tells us that this God is outside of time thus making God eternal.  This universe is governed by laws even down to the molecular level.  From the telescope to the microscope we see order even in the most complex organisms.  Thus we see that this God is omniscient.  All this demands an intelligent Designer.

 

The complexities of the human body and its development prove that we are not products of mere chance.   Our bodies were designed to relate to the world into which it was born.  Our eyes were made to see light, our ears to hear sound, and our senses to feel.  This disproves the idea of chance and shows us a God that created us for a purpose.  The fact that we have emotions tells us that the God that created us has emotion.  The fact that we have a will shows us that the God that created us has a will.  Thus we see this eternal, infinite, all powerful Creator is an actual person who possesses intelligence, sensibility, and will.  God is not an impersonal force.  And the existence of our conscience shows us that God has a perfect law.  There is right and there is wrong.  We learn then that this God is holy.

 

Much more could be said in defense of the being of God.  We are not mere accidents.  A person may drop some paint but that will not create the Mona Lisa.  Someone may by chance see the resemblance of a face in a rock but chance cannot create Mount Rushmore.  There may be an explosion of letters but it could never produce War and Peace.  We have been taught by Science, so called, all of our lives that we are insignificant and without purpose.  But our very existence shows us that we were created for a purpose.  The Bible tells us that we are and were created for God’s pleasure and not our own (Rev. 4:11).  True Science rightly proves that there was a beginning and so they rightly prove that there is a God.

 

This God has revealed Himself in His creation that we may know Him.  Even further than that He has revealed Himself in the person of Jesus Christ as was proved by the resurrection, which is the most proved historical event of all time.  We may know this God through the person of Jesus Christ.  “No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him” (John 1:18).  Science in its long trek has made full circle and come back to the words of Scripture.  “In the beginning God . . . .” (Gen. 1:1)

 

The word, in, in this prepositional phrase takes on the same meaning as within.  Therefore what is about to be said in this first thirty-one verses is what occurs within the starting point of time.  Note the word, and, (added information) that occurs at the beginning of every verse in this first chapter.  Each verse builds upon the previous verse with its central starting point in verse one.  There are some that teach what is known as the Gap Theory.  This theory says that in between verses one and two the earth is judged making it without form and void, covered with the waters of Judgment.  They teach that in this period of time Satan rebelled against God with one third of the angels.  The persons they say were judged and destroyed was a pre –Adamite race.

 

They use as their authority for this theory Gen. 1:28, and the word replenish along with other obscure passages.  We will deal with these things as we get to them and will not devote a full section of our work to refuting this theory.  But the first of mistakes that such a theory makes is the removal of the rest of the first chapter from being within the starting point of time.  Godless science has fooled some well meaning Christians in believing that the earth is billions of years old.  Even with an overwhelming amount of evidence that the earth is relatively young (the amount of dust on the moon compared to the rate of its accumulation, the slowing down of the earth’s rotation, the slow move of the earth away from the sun, etc. all of which shows the earth to be from 6,000 to 10,000 years old like the Bible seems to indicate)

 

Godless science refuses to believe in a young earth for then they would have to believe in a Creator. Christians being threatened by what seemed to be the truth (Matt. 7:15, I John 4:1) held to the Gap theory to coincide with the belief that the earth was billions of years old.  We cannot remove the first verse from the rest of the chapter.  From verse one to the end of the chapter is six consecutive days occurring within the starting point.  Jesus bore witness to this when He spoke of the creation of Adam and Eve which occurred on day six.  He said that this was at or near the time of the beginning (Matt. 19:4, Mark 10:6). This statement posses a problem for any that want to separate, in any way, the beginning in verse one from the six days of creation (Ex. 20:11).
